just go with the Flo...

Happy Nurses Week! This is my first Nurses week as an RN, and I gotta admit I got a little choked up at all of the sweet emails/messages from my fellow new-grads.

As expected, there's been alot of talk about good old old Flo (as in Florence Nightingale). I got my first copy of the Journal of Holistic Nursing yesterday, and was honestly a bit bummed to realize that the whole of it was about HER!!!

Well, I shouldn't have been bummed. In fact, she's pretty darn inspiring.

Flo was more than just a nurse. She was also a visionary theorist, social reformer, educator, health policy advocate, global networker, statistician and environmental health activist. Pretty much everything I dream to be (minus the statistics).

There's another thing about old Florence Nightingale that rings true in me, too: she referred to her work as her "must". Somehow in the years of nursing school (and I'm not blaming my instructors)that slipped by me. Her "must". It's such the perfect description of what nursing means to me. I'm not a nurse because I have "that special touch", "a gift" or loads of patience. It's my passion in life. It's just what I do. It's what I love. It's my must.

I'll be back in a couple of days with more trip-related updates. In the meantime I leave you with a quote:

"I think one's feelings waste themselves in words; they ought all to be distilled into actions which bring results."

-Florence Nightingale

Don't just be good. Make good things happen.
